A Note About My RSS Feed

You may have noticed that the blog entries on both my main page and my RSS feed are looking a little different. That’s because Sugarcrafter switched this morning from full to partial RSS feeds, a change I’ve been trying to avoid making for quite a while now. Unfortunately though, due to rampant thievery of my site content by malicious sites and bots, I’ve realized that I really need to do more to try and protect my content, lest I end up spending all of my free time chasing down these sites and filling out paperwork for DMCA notices.

Anyway, getting to the part that affects you, all of my wonderful readers – the biggest change you’ll see on both my main page and in my feed is that it’ll take a single extra click for you to get to the rest of my post content – a change that I don’t think is unreasonable. Also, because I’m not a big fan of one-sentence summaries with no photos to draw you in (since honestly, they don’t usually catch my own attention), I’ve really tried to provide a good balance of content available in my feed.

I hope these changes don’t inconvenience you; it’s really a shame that a few ill-intentioned people have to ruin it for the rest of us. Thank you again for being such amazing readers!

I do a partial feed too. It is a safer option. My blog got stolen once and it was not fun. Sorry you had to deal with such issues too. Don’t worry, I will keep coming back:)

Unfortunately it’s the nature of the beast…spam, bots, thieves, sort of comes with the Internet territory but never fun to have to deal with. Hoping your changes will better protect your intellectual property.

So, I just take a spoonful of sugar; it helps the medicine (dealing with it) go down!

THIEVES!? Where are they? LEMME AT ‘EM!

That’s such a bummer that you have to be inconvenienced just to protect what’s rightfully yours :(

I’m glad to have you around, though!! I love your blog :)

I’m noticing this more and more in the blogs that I subscribe to in my Google Reader. What bots/ thieves are you talking about? I only wonder because I guess I didn’t realize that they existed, and I want to see what everyone is talking about.

That’s just awful to have to deal with. I hope your new feeds resolve the content theft issues and of course I’ll click twice for you!

Carter – There are a number of random sites out there that are set up to automatically grab content from other people’s RSS feeds and then post it as their own. I’ve found that often these sites provide no way to contact the owner; this was the case with my most recent run-in with such a content thief, and I ended up having to contact their web host directly to notify them of the copyright infringement. You then usually need to submit a DMCA notice to the web host to prove that your content is really yours before they will remove it from the offending site.

It’s all very frustrating, and I hope you don’t have to deal with it anytime soon!

Oh lordy, I never heard of this being new to the blogging scene and all that. Sounds terrible! I understand now why people are doing partial feeds.

Stupid stinky thieves. My aunt has a blogger site and she had to re-institute the word recognition (isn’t that called captcha?) for the comments because she was getting so many spam comments. Not the same, I know, but it’s just such a pain that there are people out there propagating spam and thievery.

How did you learn you were being stolen from?

    Karen – Yeah, I think that’s what it’s called…how annoying!

I was contacted by another food blogger who let me and several others know that our content was being stolen. I’m really thankful for such a wonderful blogging community! :-)

I got that email too, who knew?!? So changing it to partial like you have stops that? How did you do it? I was wondering why so many sites have gone to that. I also do not like the one sentence w/o picture deal. Unfortunately if a site has that I usually don’t stay to look around, but now I get why they do it! Thanks for the heads up!

Shelly – Changing to a partial feed doesn’t stop theft in all cases, but it does help to prevent thieving by sites and bots that are set up to steal content automatically.

I used a WordPress plugin to create the partial feeds, but I’m sure there is something available for Blogger as well. Good luck!

My entire blog has been stolen MANY times and not just by malicious sites and bots either.

I’m going to be switching to partial feed soon.

Totally sucks, Tracy! I have no problem with an extra click – it’s the nature of the beast. Hasn’t happened to me , yet, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.

BTW, I left an award for you on my blog – hope you can stop by to pick it up!
