Grilled Pizza

Grilled Pizza

Yesterday, after reading Maria’s blog post on grilled pizza, I knew I’d be trying it. Like, immediately. As in last night for dinner.  Fortunately, I still had a batch of  Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day boule dough in my fridge, so I was ready to go!

First, I rolled out the dough and baked it on the pizza stone as I normally would for bread – but only for about 5 minutes; just enough to firm up the dough. Then, I transferred it to the counter and loaded it up – sauce, pepperoni, green and red pepper, onion, and a couple cloves worth of minced garlic.  I topped it all with mozzarella cheese, and then transferred it to the grill (which was no easy feat, as I do not currently own a pizza peel – sad, I know). I grilled it on low heat for about 20 minutes and removed it when the cheese was nice and bubbly.

And then I cut myself a piece – and wow.  Just wow.  The crust was nice and soft on the top, and firm and crispy on the bottom – and the crisp was unlike any pizza crust that’s ever come off my pizza crisper. The cheese, instead of turning a golden brown as on my oven-baked buffalo chicken pizza, was melty and gooey. And delicious. I am hooked – let the summer of grilled pizzas begin…and thanks to Maria for the inspiration!

I am so glad you tried pizza on the grill! The pizza peel helps with the transfer, you will have to splurge and get one:) The pizza looks great!!!

Thanks!! It’s true; I will have to get one, since I plan to make many more grilled pizzas this summer. :-)
