A Sugary Saturday

Last week, my friend Becky told me that she was interested in learning how to decorate a cake with fondant. She asked me if I could show her the ropes, which I thought was an excellent idea! So, yesterday we got together for a cake decorating session. We both had cakes ready that we’d made ahead of time, and we had a blast!
We made an insane amount of buttercream frosting.
No really, it was a TON of frosting:
(I’d made chocolate buttercream for the chocolate cake I did last time, so after finding a new recipe for regular buttercream, I just doubled it for two cakes. The original recipe must have been for frosting a wedding cake or something though, because we barely put a dent in it! We ended up making sugar cookies afterward just to use up some of it, and we still had a whole bunch left over.)
A clean slate for decorating:
Here are our finished cakes that we plan on bringing home to our families for Thanksgiving:
Hers (red velvet):
Mine (spice):
This time, I bought food coloring specifically for icing, so all the colors came out nicely and we didn’t need to buy any of the pre-made stuff. Our fondant tastes gooood…I definitely ate a little too much of it when we were working!
